About Mountain Pass Consulting

As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and special education teacher, my training and years of experience have given me a unique perspective on the special education process and how best to guide families through it. I am confident that together we will find the most effective path to your goals.

You might be wondering why we are called Mountain Pass Consulting. When I added advocacy to my practice, I thought about all of the challenges I have seen or heard from families throughout my career: statements such as “I feel lost,” “The special education process is overwhelming, like climbing a mountain,” or “I don’t even know where to start, I just know my child and I need help,” were recurring themes. This deeply saddened me because I knew the special education process did not need to be this hard, and I wanted to do something to help families achieve their goals.

Then I thought to myself, who am I as a practitioner and what do I bring to the table? I see myself as a guide or coach in the world of special education. I have found that a collaborative approach allows me to support families and yields the best results. When I combined these two streams of thought, with my love for the outdoors in mind, Mountain Pass Consulting seemed to be the perfect fit. I want to honor the journey people have already been on while letting them know that they are not alone and that I am here to guide and support them.

In addition to being an educational consultant and advocate, Sam is a nationally certified ski instructor and holds certifications in both alpine and adaptive ski instruction. Her passion for teaching and working with people with disabilities goes beyond her work in the classroom. The seed for these passions was planted in her love for therapeutic recreation. Sam’s firsthand experience has taught her that learning goes beyond the traditional classroom; skills that can be taught through therapeutic recreation and leisure skills can not only be generalized to the academic setting but can unlock lifelong passions, build meaningful social relationships, and help individuals live well-balanced and fulfilling lives. Whether it is in the classroom, the dojo, or on the slopes, Sam is always eager to guide individuals to their fullest potential.

“The Function of Education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education."
